To Be Danced…

“We have come to be danced” The poem says
Over and over proclaiming
the many ways that music dictates movement
They ways that the Dancing makes us free and real
The ways that dancing can be raw, painful, powerful, joyful
If we open to it
Let the music affect our mood
And the mood direct our energy
And the energy guide our movements
Then you come to be danced.

“I don’t really like that poem.”
They said,
“‘We have come to be danced’
That is too passive for me.”
In that moment, they don’t get it.
Being danced is not passive
It is opening to the moment,
It is letting the judgements fall away
Judgments about how a body should look
How a body should move,
Focusing, instead, on how a body could move
Focusing on how a body WANTS to move.

It is choosing to let the music in, again and again
And in every moment, being a conduit
That transforms vibration into action.
It is paying attention to what the musician has created
Taking it into yourself
Combining it with who you are
And allowing that to inspire and guide
Bringing that creation to your limbs and posture and expression
It is deeper truths speaking through your movements
I am human
I am animal
I am feral
I am hurt
I am angry
I will defend myself
I am beautiful
I am sexual
I am powerful
I am human

Making the ongoing choice to Be
To escape the intellectual discussion
To release yourself from the should and ought
To ride the music, the emotion, the truth
To feel when it is Enough
To step out when you are Done
To choose to step in again
To be danced
We have come
We are already here
