In the days of YouTube and Google, where harnessed electricity drives so much of our lives, from the flow of traffic to the flow of information, we find ourselves living and working in buildings of concrete, steel, and glass. Many people lament these changes, with good reason. The cost to Mother Earth has been severe as some harvest resources with no thought to the consequences and loss. These changes have brought us many gifts as well. Airplanes and satellites traverse our skies giant shipping vessels plow through the waters bringing unprecedented interconnectedness between the countries and cultures of the world. Amazing medical advancements: Vaccinations, transfusions, operations, medicine to bring better quality of life to so many.
We talk so often about being people who worship “the old gods” and they are old. Many have stories and traditions that wind back to the beginning of history itself. Those stories are rich, and meaningful. And they did not end way back then. Many of us have personal experiences of encountering someone who could have been a god or goddess. And so, for tonight, I am thinking about who these gods are, in this time and place. Where would you meet them? What would they wear? Have they grown and changed? What would their messages be today?
I don’t have answers to these questions, except in my personal relationships with the deities I spend time with. I ask these questions so you can think on them, too.
